Winter’s coming! So make sure you have enough sunscreen to get you through the season. Quite frankly, you should always have enough sunscreen for use every… single… day! Sun protection should even be used on cloudy days. Yes, you read that correctly… even on cloudy days!
The biggest misconception regarding sunscreen use is that it’s only for sunny summer days. However, ultraviolet rays – UVA and UVB rays – are just as strong when passing through clouds any time of year. Think of it this way… UVA rays are the Aging rays. These rays penetrate your skin and promote collagen breakdown, and are just as strong during winter as in summer, increasing skin damage and your risk of skin cancer. UVB rays are the Burning rays. These rays are stronger during the summer and can cause sunburn any time of year. In winter, when UVB rays are reflected off snow, they can be 80% stronger.
So, let the sun shine! Here are some tips for sunscreen use all year.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
For daily use, an SPF 30 is highly recommended. If you plan on spending time outdoors, you can go up to SPF 50. Remember, you must reapply frequently, especially if your skin is wet or sweaty. Make sure to use a moisturizer – some sunscreens have built in moisturizers – drink a lot of water for proper skin hydration and walk on the shady side of the street. If you drive a lot, invest in a visor for your driver’s side window.
Protection for Everyone, Every Day
People with darker skin tones have a natural advantage of extra protection from sunburn. However, you still need protection from potentially harmful UVA rays. Although those with fair skin can develop skin cancer from increased sun exposure, those with dark skin types can be at risk for more serious skin cancer. That’s why the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone wear sunscreen every day!
It’s Not Age, It’s Sun Damage
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, approximately 90% of visible aging comes from the time you’ve spent in the sun! Remember, sun damage is cumulative over the course of your life, so the younger you begin a daily regimen of sunscreen use, the younger you will look down the road. Wrinkles are inevitable, however, the longer you can delay their onset, the better your appearance. Plus, you’ll protect yourself from skin cancer, too!
Spot On Coverage
When applying sunscreen, make sure to cover your lips, ears (especially the tops if you have short hair or wear a ponytail), around your eyes (wearing UV-protected sunglasses helps, too), your neck, under your chin and your hands. It’s always good to remember that whatever you do on your face, you should do on your neck and hands as these two areas are often the most neglected when it comes to sun protection.
With so many sunscreens to choose from, how do you know which is best for you? At PRISM Med Spa, we recommend a physical block, which means a sunscreen that uses a combination of zinc and titanium dioxide for sun protection. Our sunscreens are available for purchase, so you’ll always have your sunscreen for the entire year… even on cloudy days!
So, let the sun shine… or not. Here’s to looking great… every single day!
